majorattestedc. 1270 CE (Codex Regius)Norse mythology
The thunderer, son of Odin, defender of gods and men, bearer of the hammer Mjölnir. The seeress promised him the greatest kill of Ragnarök and the shortest survival: he slays the world-serpent Jörmungandr at the end of all things, walks nine steps from its venom, and falls. His sons carry the hammer into the world that comes after.
